How to take product photos at home

To take good product photos at home, use soft natural or diffused window light, a clean neutral background, and a phone or camera on a tripod at product height. Shoot multiple angles, keep the product in focus, and avoid harsh shadows. Then crop, straighten, and clean the background for a professional result.

Lighting is everything

Soft, even light removes harsh shadows and shows true color. A large window with sheer curtains works well; shoot during the day and turn off overhead room lights to avoid color casts. If natural light is inconsistent, two inexpensive softbox lamps at 45 degrees give a repeatable setup.

Background and surface

Use a clean, seamless background - a white poster board curved up behind the product avoids a visible corner line. Neutral surfaces keep attention on the product. For marketplace main images you will ultimately want pure white, which is easiest to achieve by shooting on white and cleaning up afterward.

Camera setup and angles

A modern phone is enough. Put it on a tripod at the product's height, tap to focus on the product, and lock exposure. Shoot a straight-on hero shot plus three-quarter, top-down, and detail angles so buyers can see the product fully.

Cleaning up the shot

After shooting, straighten and crop so the product fills most of the frame, correct white balance, and remove distractions from the background. For marketplace listings, replace the background with pure white to meet platform rules and look professional.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a professional camera for product photos?

No. A recent smartphone on a tripod with good light produces listing-quality images. Lighting and background matter more than the camera.

How many photos should I take per product?

Aim for five to seven: a clean hero shot plus angles, scale, and detail shots. Marketplaces reward showing the product fully.

How do I get a pure white background at home?

Shoot on white and even it out in editing, or replace the background entirely so it is a clean RGB 255,255,255 white for platform compliance.
